EPIGRAPH

Language Bearers, Photographers, Diary makers
You with your memory are dead, frozen
Lost in a present that never stops passing
Here lives the incarnation of matter
A Language forever.

Like a flame burning away in the darkness
Life is flesh on bone convulsing above the ground.

PREFACE

I am happy that we have found each other in what appears to be an infinite void (i.e. cyberspace).   Formally speaking this is the website of the music project A0n. You will find all the usual ingredients -- audio, photography, live performance information, etc. -- that normally make up the whole of a music space on the internet.   However, you will also discover the philosophy that finds itself interwoven into the creation of each piece: the concepts and emotions that dictate how the sound unfolds.

The philosophy is not itself a supplement to the general lack of lyrical content, but at times emerges from within the musical structures; and at other times the music speaks where philosophic theory cannot.  For it should not be difficult to imagine how certain penetrating frequencies and harmonies affect the body in such a way that even the most beautifully moving paragraph, or book even, could never dream of laying an equal claim on the emotions.

I hope that you do not mistake my seriousness here for a dead seriousness: there is always an element of humility and/or playfulness at work as well (as should be evident in any true expression of emotion).   Perhaps one might think of a child at play: it may appear somewhat frivolous upon quick glance, yet upon interrupting a child you will find that you have disrupted a deeply active imagination that was busy constructing a world.   Perhaps my telos then is to re-create a space in which my imagination is permitted to operate freely so that it might begin to construct a world -- fuelled by the emotions -- that mirrors the seriousness of a child at play.

INTRODUCTION

A0n began as a project in 2001 when work began on what became my first release in 2003, Complacency.   This was released on what appears to be the now defunct Immanence Records in limited quantity.  I have made the tracks available in the audio section to download for free as I am not a proponent of promoting scarcity or surplus value in art.

Work has been on-going to a follow-up to Complacency entitled An apocalypse of the heart.  As the work becomes closer to completion on this, small samples may be made available for preview.

The project works to be an ever evolving one, always becoming-other.  Live performances have not been as frequent as of late, but the project itself thrives off the chance at improvisation and short-circuits that are made possible through any performance.  Even electronic music is made organic and its contigency becomes apparent when one is asked to reproduce live that which is painstakingly contrived in a synthetic environment.   I have had the opportunity to collaborate in a live environment with wonderful artists such as Forensic Entomology and Scot McKenzie.
